00:02:04
Speaker 1: returning to the magical land of the Rainbow Trolls, where
00:02:08
Speaker 1: Little Miggie is up to more mischief, this time making
00:02:12
Speaker 1: magical cupcakes that bestow their eater with the most surprising powers.
00:02:16
Speaker 1: This is Miggie's Magical Cupcakes by Luke Prendergast. Long long ago,
00:02:30
Speaker 1: when time was still young, there was a town nestled
00:02:33
Speaker 1: in the foothills of some snow capped mountains. This town
00:02:37
Speaker 1: was called Rainbow Town, and it was inhabited by a
00:02:41
Speaker 1: group of rainbow trolls. They were called the rainbow Trolls
00:02:45
Speaker 1: because of their bright, multi colored hair which pointed straight
00:02:49
Speaker 1: up to the sky, and because of the rainbow that
00:02:52
Speaker 1: hung in a huge arc above their mountain. The question
00:02:57
Speaker 1: of what could be found at the end of the
00:02:58
Speaker 1: rainbow used to be a much debated mystery. But then
00:03:02
Speaker 1: just a few months ago, a special young troll named
00:03:06
Speaker 1: Miggie had set off with her brother Bruce to answer
00:03:08
Speaker 1: the question once and for all, and what they'd found
00:03:12
Speaker 1: was a rainbow pool with lots of wonderful creatures sliding
00:03:16
Speaker 1: and splashing into the technicolored water. Ever since then, Miggie
00:03:22
Speaker 1: had become very loved in Rainbow Town. All the other
00:03:26
Speaker 1: trolls considered her a kind of hero and very brave indeed,
00:03:31
Speaker 1: and whenever she walked through town, folks would turn their
00:03:34
Speaker 1: heads and smile and wave and say, hey, there, MIGGI.
00:03:39
Speaker 1: Like today, for example, Miggie had gone for her afternoon
00:03:43
Speaker 1: swim in the river, which was often her favorite part
00:03:46
Speaker 1: of the day. Miggie was a very talented swimmer and
00:03:50
Speaker 1: loved to feel her body slipped through the icy, cold,
00:03:54
Speaker 1: crystal blue water. Often at night she dreamed that she
00:03:58
Speaker 1: had grown a tail and had become a mermaid troll. Anyway,
00:04:04
Speaker 1: just to day, as she was walking back from her swim,
00:04:07
Speaker 1: she passed old missus Edna, the most elderly troll in
00:04:11
Speaker 1: the whole village, whose hair had once been a lustrous
00:04:14
Speaker 1: pink but now was striped with plumes of sheer white.
00:04:20
Speaker 1: She was sitting in front of her troll house with
00:04:22
Speaker 1: her pettiguana Cornelius in her lap. When she saw Micky coming,
00:04:27
Speaker 1: she waved and said, hello, Micky, how was your swim?
00:04:34
Speaker 1: And Miggy waved back and replied very refreshing thanks, Miss Sedna. Next,
00:04:40
Speaker 1: she passed two young brothers, Zip and Zap, who were
00:04:43
Speaker 1: the only pair of twins in all of Rainbow Town.
00:04:47
Speaker 1: They were perfectly identical except that they had different colored hair.
00:04:51
Speaker 1: Zips was lightning yellow and Zaps was electric blue. They
00:04:56
Speaker 1: were playing catch on a patch of grass, but they
00:04:58
Speaker 1: dropped the dragon fruit that they were using as a
00:05:00
Speaker 1: ball when they saw Miggie coming so that they could wave. Finally,
00:05:06
Speaker 1: when she was almost home, she was greeted by her
00:05:10
Speaker 1: next door neighbor, Rupee. Rupee was clearly doing some work
00:05:15
Speaker 1: on his house because he was coming out of his
00:05:18
Speaker 1: front door carrying a pile of stones in his arms,
00:05:21
Speaker 1: which meant he couldn't wave at Miggie, but he called
00:05:24
Speaker 1: out watch Miggie, and MIGGI said, afternoon, Rupee. Finally, Miggie
00:05:33
Speaker 1: was back at her cozy caves she shared with her family,
00:05:37
Speaker 1: and as soon as she stepped through the door, she
00:05:39
Speaker 1: could tell that her dad was baking. Her dad was
00:05:43
Speaker 1: creative in all kinds of ways. It was he who
00:05:47
Speaker 1: was in charge of painting cave paintings and weaving tapestries
00:05:51
Speaker 1: and carving statues to decorate Rainbow Town. He even wrote
00:05:56
Speaker 1: the songs that they sang every year at the Rainbow
00:05:59
Speaker 1: Day parade. And when he was at home, he liked
00:06:03
Speaker 1: to bake the most delicious treats in the world. Muffins
00:06:07
Speaker 1: and chocolate mud pies, cakes and cookies and flaky pastries. Yum,
00:06:15
Speaker 1: Maggy said, coming into the kitchen, that smells amazing. What
00:06:20
Speaker 1: are you making? I'm making some cupcakes, said her dad,
00:06:26
Speaker 1: brushing flour out of his bright green hair and patting
00:06:29
Speaker 1: his hands on his apron worn to help. Oh yes, please,
00:06:34
Speaker 1: cried Miggie, and straightway she put on her purple apron
00:06:39
Speaker 1: that hung on the back of the door. There was
00:06:42
Speaker 1: little in the world she enjoyed more than helping her
00:06:44
Speaker 1: dad with his baking, and so they set to work.
00:06:49
Speaker 1: Maggie followed her dad's instructions, cracking eggs, pouring milk, sifting flour,
00:06:55
Speaker 1: and adding little drops of flavorseme essences like vanilla and
00:07:00
Speaker 1: cinnamon and nutmeg. Then she mixed the batter with a
00:07:05
Speaker 1: whisk until it was smooth and silky and a pale
00:07:09
Speaker 1: gold in color. Her dad asked her to add one
00:07:13
Speaker 1: final thing, a handful of chocolate drops, which stood in
00:07:17
Speaker 1: a glass jar on a shelf above where Maggie was mixing.
00:07:21
Speaker 1: She'll think, dad, Meggy said. But as she reached up
00:07:26
Speaker 1: for the jar of chocolate drops, little did Miggy realize
00:07:30
Speaker 1: she was nudging and nudging at the jar that stood
00:07:33
Speaker 1: next to it, And soon enough that jar fell and,
00:07:39
Speaker 1: in an irruption of glitter, emptied its contents into the batter.
00:07:44
Speaker 1: Oh no, said Meggie, Look what I've done. The cake
00:07:49
Speaker 1: batter she had made now had a heap of sparkly,
00:07:53
Speaker 1: multi colored glitter in it. It sparkled blue and green
00:07:59
Speaker 1: and pink and gold and looked pretty beautiful. Miggy thought
00:08:04
Speaker 1: to herself, in spite of her mistake, What do I do?
00:08:10
Speaker 1: Her dad came over to inspect what had happened, and then,
00:08:14
Speaker 1: much to Miggy's surprise, he put his hand over his
00:08:18
Speaker 1: mouth and started laughing. What's so funny, Miggy asked, beginning
00:08:24
Speaker 1: to laugh too, because laughter is one of those absolutely
00:08:28
Speaker 1: infectious things that can't be resisted, even when you don't
00:08:32
Speaker 1: want to laugh. Are you laughing because I made a mess? Yes,
00:08:40
Speaker 1: her dad said, through his giggling. It's a real mess.
00:08:45
Speaker 1: But also because of all the things to accidentally tip
00:08:49
Speaker 1: into some cupcake batter, it's particularly funny that you've tipped
00:08:54
Speaker 1: this in, why, Miggy asked, Well, because this stuff that
00:09:00
Speaker 1: looks like glitter isn't glitter at all. It's a special
00:09:05
Speaker 1: magical substance that your mother collected from the fruit of
00:09:08
Speaker 1: the rare shining trees that grow up on the mountain slope.
00:09:14
Speaker 1: The glitter has lots of magical qualities. It can cause
00:09:18
Speaker 1: all kinds of weird and wonderful things to happen. And
00:09:22
Speaker 1: the idea that you'd bake it into a cupcake, well,
00:09:27
Speaker 1: but it seemed like her dad couldn't even finish the sentence.
00:09:32
Speaker 1: All he said was, let's just bake them and see.
00:09:37
Speaker 1: And so the shining tree glitter filled cupcakes went into
00:09:41
Speaker 1: the stone fire oven, and Miggie watched from a safe
00:09:45
Speaker 1: distance as the batter rose and popped over the top
00:09:49
Speaker 1: of the paper cupcake cups like a series of little
00:09:53
Speaker 1: golden rising suns. When her dad took them out of
00:09:57
Speaker 1: the oven and wafted them with a and so that
00:10:00
Speaker 1: they could cool down. Miggy could see all the glitter
00:10:04
Speaker 1: dust sparkling in them. Just then, her brother Bruce walked in.
00:10:11
Speaker 1: He was known all through Rainbow Town as being a
00:10:14
Speaker 1: very strong troll, good at picking up trees that had
00:10:18
Speaker 1: fallen down in a storm or carrying ginormous baskets of
00:10:22
Speaker 1: apples and berries they collected from the fruit fields around
00:10:26
Speaker 1: the town. But being so strong meant that he also
00:10:31
Speaker 1: had a big appetite. And when Bruce walked in, before
00:10:36
Speaker 1: anyone could stop him, he picked up one of the
00:10:39
Speaker 1: magic cupcakes and swallowed the whole thing in one go. Up. Oh,
00:10:46
Speaker 1: said their dad with a wry little smile. What, asked
00:10:51
Speaker 1: Bruce through a mouthful of cake, Well, said their dad.
00:10:56
Speaker 1: We're about to find out what. What Miggie's dad had
00:11:02
Speaker 1: said was absolutely true. And soon enough, Miggie and her
00:11:06
Speaker 1: father watched as Bruce began to change color. It started
00:11:11
Speaker 1: at his feet and began to rise up his body,
00:11:14
Speaker 1: until every bit of his body except for his tuft
00:11:18
Speaker 1: of bright red hair, had turned a vivid lime green.
00:11:24
Speaker 1: Told you they were magic, said her dad, and Miggie
00:11:29
Speaker 1: started laughing. What's happened, asked Bruce, wide eyed with confusion.
00:11:37
Speaker 1: When he did, Bruce's mouth fell open. I'm green, he said,
00:11:46
Speaker 1: I'm green? Am I going to be green forever? Now?
00:11:50
Speaker 1: But their dad reassured him that he would only be
00:11:53
Speaker 1: green for a few minutes. The cupcake's effects would wear
00:11:57
Speaker 1: off pretty soon. But they a lot of magical fun,
00:12:02
Speaker 1: he added. We should eat more of them and find
00:12:06
Speaker 1: out what else they do, but we should head outside.
00:12:10
Speaker 1: We don't want to risk ruining our cozy cave. Miggie
00:12:15
Speaker 1: and Bruce agreed that that would be a fun thing
00:12:17
Speaker 1: to do, and so they picked up the tray of
00:12:20
Speaker 1: cupcakes and followed their dad outside, where the sun shone
00:12:25
Speaker 1: its soft warmth down on them, and butterflies bobbed from
00:12:29
Speaker 1: flower to flower, and their next door neighbor, Rupee, was
00:12:33
Speaker 1: still working on his house. Okay, said their dad, who
00:12:39
Speaker 1: wants to try one next? Bruce, whose stomach was still groaning, hungrily,
00:12:46
Speaker 1: shut his hand in the air. By now, the green
00:12:49
Speaker 1: color was already drifting from his face, and in a
00:12:53
Speaker 1: few seconds more it was almost completely gone. Oh me,
00:12:58
Speaker 1: he said, I didn't even get to enjoy the last
00:13:01
Speaker 1: one because I got a bit worried about turning green.
00:13:06
Speaker 1: All right, then, said their dad, and handed Bruce another magical,
00:13:11
Speaker 1: sparkly cupcake. He popped the whole thing into his mouth again,
00:13:17
Speaker 1: chewed and chewed, nodded and raised his eyebrows, which Miggie
00:13:22
Speaker 1: knew meant yummy, this cupcake is delicious, and swallowed. Then
00:13:30
Speaker 1: Miggie and her dad watched with quiet excitement to see
00:13:33
Speaker 1: what would happen next. It started with his legs. They
00:13:39
Speaker 1: began to grow, but they didn't grow bigger. They grew longer.
00:13:45
Speaker 1: Then Bruce's arms began to grow long too, like spaghetti.
00:13:51
Speaker 1: Then his body started to get stretched out too, like
00:13:55
Speaker 1: he was being pulled up into the sky. He grew
00:13:59
Speaker 1: tall and taller and taller, until until Bruce, who was
00:14:06
Speaker 1: by no means tall even for a troll, had grown
00:14:09
Speaker 1: at least ten times in height. From where Miggie was stood,
00:14:15
Speaker 1: it almost looked like he had his head in the white,
00:14:19
Speaker 1: fluffy marshmallow clouds. Wow, said Bruce, and it sounded like
00:14:27
Speaker 1: his voice came from much further away than it usually did.
00:14:32
Speaker 1: I can see everything from up here, all the mountains
00:14:38
Speaker 1: and the valleys that stretch all the way to the horizon. Yikes,
00:14:45
Speaker 1: cried Rupy, the next door neighbor, as he came out
00:14:48
Speaker 1: of the house and spotted the giant Bruce for the
00:14:51
Speaker 1: first time. What's happened to him? Maggie explained that Bruce
00:14:57
Speaker 1: had eaten a magic cupcake and that he'd be back
00:15:01
Speaker 1: to normal in just a few minutes. Rupe nodded, and
00:15:06
Speaker 1: then his big eyes brightened up with an idea. Hey, Bruce,
00:15:11
Speaker 1: while you're that big, do you think you could have
00:15:14
Speaker 1: a look down my chimney. I think something is stuck
00:15:18
Speaker 1: in there and I haven't been able to get it out.
00:15:22
Speaker 1: Sure thing, Rupe replied Bruce from way up above. He
00:15:28
Speaker 1: bent over to peer his eye down Rupe's chimney and said, ah,
00:15:34
Speaker 1: I think I see something. Let me try to get it,
00:15:39
Speaker 1: and he slipped his long, skinny arms straight down into
00:15:44
Speaker 1: the chimney, gave a few tugs, and pulled out a
00:15:48
Speaker 1: bird's nest, complete with two blackbirds and a little pile
00:15:53
Speaker 1: of eggs. One of the blackbirds gave a squawk as
00:15:57
Speaker 1: if to say, hey, why did think are you doing?
00:16:00
Speaker 1: Put me down? For some reason, Bruce seemed to understand blackbird,
00:16:07
Speaker 1: because he turned and placed the nest upon a strong well,
00:16:11
Speaker 1: shouted branch of a nearby tree. There the two blackbirds
00:16:16
Speaker 1: chirruped merrily, clearly pleased with their new home. You're very welcome,
00:16:23
Speaker 1: Bruce said to them, and then he began to shrink.
00:16:28
Speaker 1: First his body shrunk, then his arms, and finally his legs,
00:16:34
Speaker 1: until he was returned to his normal height. He gave
00:16:38
Speaker 1: his limbs a little shake, as if trying to dispel
00:16:41
Speaker 1: the final feelings of the magic in his body. Oh,
00:16:46
Speaker 1: he said, that's felt kind of weird, not bad, just weird.
00:16:54
Speaker 1: Rupee was beaming at him. Thank you, Bruce, Thank you.
00:16:58
Speaker 1: That chimney problem has been vexing me for days. Who
00:17:03
Speaker 1: could have imagined a whole nest of blackbirds would be
00:17:06
Speaker 1: setting up home in there? And he gripped Bruce's hand,
00:17:11
Speaker 1: shook it, and disappeared inside his house. Miggie, Bruce, and
00:17:18
Speaker 1: their dad carried on their stroll through the village. Who next,
00:17:24
Speaker 1: Miggie's dad said, and Miggie said, you should go next, dad,
00:17:29
Speaker 1: after all, they are your cupcakes. Well okay, then her
00:17:36
Speaker 1: dad replied, there's not much arguing with that reasoning. He
00:17:43
Speaker 1: wriggled his fingers in the air as he selected the
00:17:46
Speaker 1: perfect cupcake for him, choosing one with lots of silver
00:17:50
Speaker 1: sparkles in it. Here goes, he said, before taking one
00:17:56
Speaker 1: big bite and then another, until the cupcake was all gone.
00:18:02
Speaker 1: Maggie and Bruce waited for a few moments, watching their
00:18:06
Speaker 1: dad carefully, wondering what about him was going to change.
00:18:12
Speaker 1: But almost a whole minute passed and their dad didn't
00:18:15
Speaker 1: seem any different, and that was much longer than it
00:18:19
Speaker 1: had taken Bruce to turn green or to grow super tall.
00:18:25
Speaker 1: What's happening, asked Miggie. Did that cupcake have no magical
00:18:31
Speaker 1: effect at all? Hm? I'm not sure. Nothing about me
00:18:38
Speaker 1: looks different, does it. Maggie and Bruce both shook their heads,
00:18:45
Speaker 1: and yet their dad continued, something feels different, hold on,
00:18:54
Speaker 1: let me try something. Their dad frowned as though he
00:18:59
Speaker 1: were concentrating very hard, and then he vanished. One moment
00:19:06
Speaker 1: he was there, and one moment he was gone. WHOA,
00:19:12
Speaker 1: said Bruce, Dad, Where have you gone? Are you invisible?
00:19:17
Speaker 1: There didn't seem to be any answer, but then they
00:19:21
Speaker 1: heard something. It was their dad's voice, but far away.
00:19:26
Speaker 1: In fact, it was coming from down the track. They
00:19:30
Speaker 1: peered down the lane and saw the figure of their
00:19:33
Speaker 1: father standing at the far end of it. Hey, slow coaches,
00:19:39
Speaker 1: The dad called, hurry up, I'm down here. Miggie and
00:19:45
Speaker 1: Bruce hurried down the road to where their dad was waiting.
00:19:49
Speaker 1: That was pretty impressive, dad said, Miggie. Seems I couldn't
00:19:55
Speaker 1: disappear and reappear somewhere else, now, he replied. Then from
00:20:02
Speaker 1: behind them, there came the sound of a wow. They
00:20:07
Speaker 1: turned around and saw that the twins Zip and Zip
00:20:11
Speaker 1: were standing just behind them, staring wide eyed with surprise.
00:20:16
Speaker 1: Zip held the dragon fruit they'd been playing with earlier
00:20:19
Speaker 1: in their hand man. Mister Miggy said, Zap, that was crazy.
00:20:26
Speaker 1: How do you do that? It's one of Miggy's magic cupcakes.
00:20:33
Speaker 1: The dad explained, It seems I can't teleport myself, probably
00:20:40
Speaker 1: just for a few moments more, do you think, said Zip,
00:20:45
Speaker 1: tossing the dragon fruit in the air and catching it.
00:20:49
Speaker 1: That if I threw this fruit really far, you could
00:20:53
Speaker 1: Zip Zap right over there and catch it clean out
00:20:56
Speaker 1: of the air. I'm pretty sure I could, said their
00:21:01
Speaker 1: dad with a little chuckle. Let's give her to go.
00:21:06
Speaker 1: Zip looked delighted. Okay, he said, here we go, and
00:21:14
Speaker 1: he threw the dragon fruit as far as he could,
00:21:17
Speaker 1: mustering all the might in his little arm. The dragon
00:21:21
Speaker 1: fruit went soaring like a bird through the air, twisting
00:21:26
Speaker 1: and tumbling as it went. Mickie was watching her dad,
00:21:30
Speaker 1: though he'd got that look of concentration on his face again,
00:21:35
Speaker 1: little frown lines appearing all over his forehead, and then
00:21:41
Speaker 1: just like that, he was gone. Got it, He called
00:21:46
Speaker 1: from way further down the track where he'd reappeared, and
00:21:51
Speaker 1: plucked the dragon fruit right out of the air. Now
00:21:55
Speaker 1: he was holding it up with his hands. Oh, sighed
00:22:01
Speaker 1: Zip and Zap in unison, and then they were all
00:22:04
Speaker 1: applauding dad's marvelous trick. A second later, their dad was
00:22:11
Speaker 1: beside them once again, handing the dragon fruit back to
00:22:14
Speaker 1: the two little twin trolls. That was fun, he said,
00:22:21
Speaker 1: but I'm pretty sure the effect is wearing off now.
00:22:26
Speaker 1: I think that will be the last teleportation magic trick
00:22:30
Speaker 1: I can do. They waved goodbye to Zip and Zap
00:22:35
Speaker 1: and made their way down the lane a little bit more.
00:22:39
Speaker 1: The day was getting later. The sun was hanging low
00:22:43
Speaker 1: beside the mountains, sending a rich golden light over the
00:22:48
Speaker 1: Rainbow town, glinting off the roofs of the houses and
00:22:53
Speaker 1: glittering on the river, which curled like a shining ribbon
00:22:57
Speaker 1: in the distance. Okay, Miggy, Bruce said, now it's your turn,
00:23:06
Speaker 1: choose a cupcake to eat. Miggy looked at the tray
00:23:10
Speaker 1: of cupcakes, swaying up each one. In her mind, they
00:23:15
Speaker 1: were all cupcakes, and yet each one looked different. They
00:23:20
Speaker 1: had their own particular colors and textures, different glittery constitutions,
00:23:27
Speaker 1: and Miggy knew that, by some mysterious magical laws, the
00:23:32
Speaker 1: effects that each one would have would be completely different,
00:23:38
Speaker 1: so it was important to choose carefully. At last, she
00:23:43
Speaker 1: chose one that was a deep golden color with pink
00:23:47
Speaker 1: sparkles gathered on the well baked top. Here goes, she said,
00:23:55
Speaker 1: and opening her mouth wide, she ate her cupcake in
00:23:59
Speaker 1: fuber and she had to admit it was absolutely delicious,
00:24:04
Speaker 1: light and fluffy and warm and sweet. Once she'd eaten
00:24:10
Speaker 1: it all, she waited a few moments for the effects
00:24:14
Speaker 1: to take place. She wondered what she'd feel, Would her
00:24:19
Speaker 1: dad and Bruce notice the changes before she did, What
00:24:24
Speaker 1: if nothing happened at all? But then she began to
00:24:28
Speaker 1: feel it. It started as a tingling in her finger
00:24:33
Speaker 1: tips and toes, and then her hair began to feel
00:24:37
Speaker 1: like it was standing on end. Soon enough, the tingling
00:24:43
Speaker 1: feeling was going through her whole body, wiggling over her
00:24:47
Speaker 1: skin and making everything feel warm inside. Then there was
00:24:53
Speaker 1: a very strange feeling in her back, right between her
00:24:57
Speaker 1: shoulder blades. It was like, wow, it was a strange
00:25:01
Speaker 1: thing to think. Miggy knew, but it was as though
00:25:04
Speaker 1: something were growing there. Her brother let out a whistle
00:25:10
Speaker 1: of approval, and her dad muttered, almost to himself, Wow,
00:25:16
Speaker 1: would you look at that? Would you look at what?
00:25:22
Speaker 1: Miggy asked, what's happened? Have a look over your shoulder,
00:25:27
Speaker 1: Sis Bruce said, with a grin. Miggie did as her
00:25:33
Speaker 1: brother had told her. She craned her neck over her
00:25:36
Speaker 1: shoulders and was confronted with a mass of gorgeous, fluffy feathers. Yes,
00:25:46
Speaker 1: it was true, they were feathers, lustrous feathers, the same
00:25:51
Speaker 1: bright lilac color of the thick mass of hair that
00:25:55
Speaker 1: grew like a big purple flame on the top of
00:25:58
Speaker 1: Miggy's head. She had grown wings, and in fact she
00:26:05
Speaker 1: could feel in her body just how to move them.
00:26:08
Speaker 1: They were connected to her mind in just the same
00:26:11
Speaker 1: way her hands or her feet were. She could flex
00:26:15
Speaker 1: them just like this, and she could spread them just
00:26:20
Speaker 1: like that. And if she Miggy's feet began to rise
00:26:25
Speaker 1: off the ground, she gave another flap of her wings,
00:26:30
Speaker 1: and she floated up higher into the air. Awesome, Miggie,
00:26:36
Speaker 1: Bruce said, from a few feet below her. Now you're flying.
00:26:42
Speaker 1: What an amazing, magical cupcake that one was. Maggie could
00:26:48
Speaker 1: feel a cool breeze floating through her hair and through
00:26:53
Speaker 1: the air pockets in the feathers of her new wings.
00:26:58
Speaker 1: She was getting used to the feeling of flight now too.
00:27:02
Speaker 1: With a flap of her wings, she swam forward through
00:27:05
Speaker 1: the air, then hovered slightly above her Dad and Bruce.
00:27:11
Speaker 1: She had always adored swimming, but this was another thing altogether.
00:27:17
Speaker 1: You could move through the air so speedily, so gracefully.
00:27:23
Speaker 1: You could swivel and swoop and glide. Follow me down
00:27:29
Speaker 1: the road, she said, And then she shook her feathers
00:27:33
Speaker 1: and flew down the path. Evening was settling in now,
00:27:38
Speaker 1: and the sky was filled with twilight. Miggie flew past
00:27:43
Speaker 1: budded trees and boulders, passed clutches of flowers growing on
00:27:49
Speaker 1: the verges, and a group of grazing rabbits who looked
00:27:52
Speaker 1: rather confused to see a flying troll, which was a
00:27:56
Speaker 1: sight no creature around these parts had ever seen before.
00:28:01
Speaker 1: At last she came to where old missus Edna, with
00:28:05
Speaker 1: her gray and pink striped hair, usually sat on her chair.
00:28:09
Speaker 1: But now she wasn't sitting. She was standing up, leaning
00:28:14
Speaker 1: on her walking stick, and looking up into a tall
00:28:18
Speaker 1: plane tree. Oh hello, Miggy, the old troll said, and
00:28:25
Speaker 1: then she added nice wings, as though it were the
00:28:30
Speaker 1: most normal thing in the world to see Miggy not
00:28:33
Speaker 1: walking on her own two feet, but sailing through the air.
00:28:38
Speaker 1: What's up, missus Edner, Miggy asked, and for an answer,
00:28:43
Speaker 1: missus Edna pointed up high into the tree, where Miggie,
00:28:47
Speaker 1: peering upwards, could see the old lady's pettaguana, Cornelius, sitting
00:28:53
Speaker 1: in a high branch. He got himself up there, missus
00:28:59
Speaker 1: Edna said, But now he can't get himself down no
00:29:05
Speaker 1: matter how much I call out to him. He's stuck. Say, Miggy,
00:29:12
Speaker 1: do you reckon? You could fly up there on those
00:29:15
Speaker 1: beautiful lilac wings of yours and bring him down for me.
00:29:21
Speaker 1: I'd be ever so grateful. Oh, of course, missus Edna,
00:29:26
Speaker 1: I'd be happy to Miggy replied, and with a few
00:29:31
Speaker 1: flaps of her wings, she was up in the leafy
00:29:34
Speaker 1: branches of the plane tree, easing Cornelius from the branch
00:29:39
Speaker 1: she'd found himself stuck on, and carrying him back down
00:29:42
Speaker 1: to missus Edner. Missus Edna clutched Cornelius in her arms
00:29:48
Speaker 1: and planted a bunch of kisses on top of his
00:29:51
Speaker 1: scaly head. Oh, Cornelius, she said, I thought you were
00:29:59
Speaker 1: never going to come down. What do you say to MIGGI? Now?
00:30:04
Speaker 1: Come on? Say thank you, Cornelius. The iguana gave a
00:30:11
Speaker 1: loud croak, which MIGGI assumed meant thank you. You're perfectly welcome, Cornelius,
00:30:20
Speaker 1: Miggy said, And then she felt another tingling feeling and
00:30:26
Speaker 1: a strange feeling between her shoulder blades, and she knew
00:30:31
Speaker 1: that her wings had disappeared. The effects of the magic
00:30:36
Speaker 1: cupcake were over. How did that feel, Miggie asked her dad,
00:30:43
Speaker 1: who had just arrived beside her with Bruce. She told
00:30:47
Speaker 1: him that he felt wonderful to soar through the air,
00:30:51
Speaker 1: but that now she was very tired. Indeed, Miggie gave
00:30:56
Speaker 1: a yawn, and Bruce gave one too. Yes, said their dad.
00:31:03
Speaker 1: Knight's approaching. I'd say it's almost time for bed. And
00:31:11
Speaker 1: so they said a good knight to old missus Edna
00:31:15
Speaker 1: and Cornelius the iguana, and set off the way they'd come.
00:31:21
Speaker 1: The night was warm and gentle, the moon up above
00:31:25
Speaker 1: the mountains cast a silvery glow all over the houses
00:31:29
Speaker 1: and caves of Rainbow down. What fun it is to
00:31:35
Speaker 1: bake some magical cupcakes, said their dad. Yes, said Miggy,
00:31:42
Speaker 1: And I'm glad we managed to help out some of
00:31:45
Speaker 1: the towns folk too. Ah, yes, Bruce agreed. Without your wings,
00:31:52
Speaker 1: who knows whether Cornelius would ever have come down from
00:31:55
Speaker 1: that tree. Well, Miggie replied, with great magic comes great responsibility.
00:32:05
Speaker 1: They all laughed and linked their arms together. Then they
00:32:10
Speaker 1: walked arm in arm back to the cave, where their
00:32:14
Speaker 1: mom would be waiting and the dad would cook another
00:32:17
Speaker 1: delicious meal, and before falling into a deep sleep, they
00:32:22
Speaker 1: would tell their mom all about their wondrous day and
00:32:26
Speaker 1: the adventures they'd been on with their dad's magic cupcakes.
